  • "Tales of Silk and Music" - Indian Dance Festival

Devonshire Square is marking the UK-India Year of Culture with a sensorially engaging retrospective journey through Indian dancing styles, from contemporary Bollywood shows to some of the most ancient and symbolically charged Indian classical dances. The 7 week programme will showcase acts by some of the most talented dancers in the South Asian dance panorama presented by Akademi South Asian Dance, while the Bollywood themed opening show will be presented by Bollywood Co. The UK-India Year of Culture represents a perfect opportunity to celebrate Devonshire Square’s rich and charming history which is strongly linked to India. The 4 acre campus - today a premium office and retail destination as well as an artistic hub - used to be a complex of warehouses back in 1820 where the most valuable goods traded by the East India Company used to be stored. The dancers’ strikingly colourful and elaborated costumes will bring to life India’s precious textiles once stored in the Bengal Warehouse, evoked also by the festival’s title “Tales of Silk and Music”, creating a powerful metaphorical link between Devonshire Square past, as a warehouse, and present, as a culturally vibrant destination. All shows will take place on Thursdays at 12.30pm in Devonshire Square’s historical Western Courtyard from 6th July till 17th August. All performances are free attendance and registration is not required.

The talented artists will present a fusion of modern and classical Indian dance, using a mix of East and West beats to represent the cultural link between the two countries. Bollywood Co is an authentic Bollywood dance company based at the world-renowned Pineapple Dance Studio, in central London. The company has produced Bollywood events for several high profile corporates such as Jet Airways, Warner Music, American Express and Net-a-Porter. • Art Night's 2017 Associate Programme - "Cache" by Candida Powell-Williams

Bosse & Baum is pleased to present Candida Powell-Williams’s interactive site-specific installation at Devonshire Square’s historic Central Courtyard, as part of Art Night’s 2017 Associate Programme. Taking place for the first time alongside the second edition of Art Night, the Associate Programme features a roster of nocturnal events by 31 local organisations and site-specific projects by 29 independent artists and curators in locations across the East End, as far spread as the Docklands and London Fields, opening up the city in unique and creative ways for the night of Saturday 1 July 2017. The participants were invited via an Open Call to reflect on the history and future of the area, emphasising the urban environment and contributing to the late-night celebratory spirit of Art Night. The origins of Devonshire Square form the starting point of Candida Powell-William’s sculptural and performative intervention. The complex of warehouses, built by the East India Company in the late 1700s, stored luxury goods mostly from Bengal. Powell-Williams’ work for this project draws imagery from the textiles housed there and mixes them with cultural references as well as the site’s contemporary uses, folding into and combing the past with the present. The work, a series of sculptural jigsaw-like rug pieces, explores the disintegration and fragmentation of patterns as a means to reflect on our present day relationship to the site’s history. Powell-Williams’s installation will be animated by an interactive performance taking places throughout the evening. Art Night 2017 is held in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery and curated by independent curator and writer Fatoş Üstek. The festival is generously supported by international auction house Phillips. Candida Powell-Williams’ project for the Art Night 2017 Associate Programme is kindly supported by Devonshire Square.
