Kathak dance by Sujata Banerjee Dance Company, presented by Akademi South Asian Dance
10/08/2017: 12:30 PM - 1:20 PM
On Thursday 10th August at 12.30pm, Devonshire Square’s Western Courtyard will be the stage for an outstanding Kathak dance show by Sujata Banerjee Dance, presented by Akademi South Asian Dance.
The origin of the Kathak is traditionally attributed to the travelling bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathakars or storytellers. Stylistically, this dance form emphasizes rhythmic foot movements while the legs and torso are generally straight; the story is told through gestures of arms and upper body movement, facial expressions, bends and turns.
The free attendance Kathak dance show is part of the “Tales of Silk and Music” Indian Dance Festival, organised by the Devonshire Square’s Artistic Events Team to celebrate the UK-India Year of Culture.
